Best of the Fest finalists 2011

Winner was Zora Patrick's Book of Poetry and Short Stories, many of which were written from cat perspective. Zora is just 10 years of age, so is by far our youngest winner to date.

1st Runner Up went to Tessa (Ak Zinefest Organiser) & Damian's zine of collages - HWAH, captioned by what appeared to be archived primary school text book writing.

2nd Runner Up went to Alex Papanastasiou's feminists, feminants & femimaybees...; chatty examinations of the currency of feminism from an array of female and male perspectives.

Congratulations all!

The Comics Show

Throughout the day The Comics Show, a documentary about comic books in New Zealand by Shirley Horrocks will be screening in the library space.

“The writing and drawing of comic books has remained a little-known and under-rated area of New Zealand culture. Director Shirley Horrocks reveals it to us as a highly creative subculture with a rich local history. Despite a moral panic about comics in the ‘40s and ‘50s (recalled here by Eric Resetar, the grand old man of local comics), later decades brought us the exciting counter-culture work of Barry Linton and the other artists of Strips magazine (such as Dick Frizzell and Grant Major), the new directions taken by women artists such as Coco and Pritika), and the publication of long-form ‘graphic novels’ such as Ant Sang’s Dharma Punks and Dylan Horrocks’s Hicksville. There are now comics for all ages and interests. Comics have links with animation and with music (as shown by Chris Knox and Karl Wills among others). This highly entertaining and visually inventive film takes us from Auckland street culture, to Wellington’s ‘Eric Awards’, to a do-it-yourself comic collective (‘Funtime’ in Christchurch). This is an unexpected, eye-opening arts documentary with broad appeal.”

Here's a bunch of gorgeous photos from Wellington Zinefest '09 at Mighty Mighty, courtesy of David Buck. The deep reds and greens of Mighty Mighty sure make a pretty picture.

More people attended Wellington Zinefest '09 than Wellington Zinefest '08 at the Wesley Church Hall. We're torn between our love of this new venue and it's eccentric charms and the possible need for a bigger space (what a nice dilemma to have).

The zine compiled from the make-a-zine-page workshoppers is a thing of beauty. Many keen folk laboured over their thematic montages, creating pages with a real sense of craft and wit. Wellington City Library's Stephanie Poulopoulos is compiling the results for all contributors right about now. And on that subject, The Wellington City Library bought many new zine titles to add to their growing collection.

We poached Auckland Zinefest's best of the fest idea, awarding the trophy for 2009 to Nick of Cross Street Studios, who's debut zine Chew Gum Bitches had the cutest drawings, funniest captions and best packaging of all.

Zinefest is in TWO DAYS!

I can't believe how close zinefest is! Only friday to go and then.... Zinefest! on saturday.

Some exciting things have happened in the lead up - today the trophy for the Zine-of-the-Fest was delivered to my office and I have to say... I think it is the most beautiful thing I have seen! I won't give too much away but it will be on display at the Zinefest stall on saturday along with Zinefest T shirts and badges!

Also there will be a zine swap box which is a great way to get new zines that you have never seen before! We have had a swap box every other year and it's always very popular.

We can't wait to see you all there at Mighty Mighty! Turn up from 12 and keep coming till 5. There will be panels, talks and workshops and every year the Wellington City Central Zine Library have a great area for reading and browsing.

Can't wait! See you on saturday.

Hi All!

While we have been busy organising Wellington Zinefst 09 I can't help but reminisce about zinefest 08. It was held at Wesley Church Hall and I thought I would post a few photos. This years zinefest is exciting because we have a new venue in Mighty Mighty on Cuba St and with a new venue comes a new set up, different people coming to the event and a whole different feel - and change is good!

But for now lets revisit some great times from last year:)
